ABOUT ME
This project spans almost 10 years. It was an on-and-off affair as life inserted itself and created one distraction after another. I had made myself the original modified messenger bag and it garnered lots of compliments and positive attention. This inspired me to create a collection and share them with the world.
My favorite part was shopping for all the material, the colours and textures were so compelling. In these 10 years I moved from my home country and career in Canada to Costa Rica, spent 6 years raising pigs and chickens, then moved to the beach and got into that life.
I’ve been knitting for as long as I can remember. My mom taught me, she was taught by hers, who was taught by hers, and on and on back in time.
I consider this collection a sort of art project. Each bag is unique and named after a woman in my life who has enriched my life in way or another.
WHAT GOES INTO THE BAGS
The bags are knitted with cotton or raw silk yarn. Only the fluorescent coloured shaggy bags are polyester yarn. No patterns are used, each bag is 'figured out' as I go along. My methods have evolved, but the colour blocking ideas remain the same. I see it first in my mind then I create it.
The interiors are made from a variety of fabrics left over from other projects including cotton, canvas, linen, and even felted upholstery fabric.
I use vintage buttons from my mother’s sewing box as fasteners, and the tools are knitting needles, sewing needles and thread.
